How We Tested

To test the riding mowers, zero turns and stand-on Husqvarna mowers we mowed nearly 10 acres across 4 different acreages.

Put simply:  We mowed 4 neighbors’ grass.

We also tested our favorite zero turn (from the acreage testing) on smaller lawns to confirm our field results in tighter mowing conditions.

To test the push mowers we mowed several lawns to get a good feel for the battery life and cut quality of the new Husqvarna electric mowers.

To test the robot mower we installed the loop wire around the barrier of our own lawn. Our lawn is relatively flat but does have a narrow pass through section and other barrier to make things harder for the robot mower.

What we look for during field testing:

Cut Quality

Most of cut quality comes down to sharp blades but we still take not of the following:

  • Does the lawn mower leave the lawn looking neat and tidy?
  • Does the lawn mower get through tough grass with ease?
  • Do you have to mow the same lane twice because the mower doesn’t cut the grass even?

User Experience

We judge mower user experience based on type.

Robot Mower

  • How easy is it to install the wire boundary?
  • How easy is it to get started mowing with the robot mower?
  • How complicated are the controls and programming of the AutoMower?
  • How quickly does the robot mower remember your lawn and mow without you needing to watch it?

Walk-behind Mower

  • How easy is it to start and operate?
  • Is the blade safety system fool-proof?

Riding Mower

  • How good does it drive – is it comfortable or a back killer?
  • How easy is it to start and get mowing?
  • How responsive is the brake and accelerator?
  • How good does it handle on hills and over bumpy terrain?

Zero Turn Mower

  • How tight does it turn?
  • How easy is the lap bar steering to get used to and use?

Stand-on Mower

  • How bumpy is the ride – does it hurt the knees?
  • How does the steering compare to riding mowers?

Build Quality

  • Are all the parts plastic or metal?
  • Is it flimsy and bendy?
  • How much stuff is glued together versus welded or mechanically fastened?

Mower Reliability and Durability

  • How easy is the mower to fix?
  • Are parts available locally?
  • How good is the warranty?
  • How many Husqvarna local dealers are there?

All-in-all we like to test in the field – in the real world – not in a lab.

In terms of mowers – Husqvarna makes the bestselling robot mower and the bestselling zero turn mower for residential use.

They have a huge range of lawn mower types to choose from and have a massive dealer network throughout the USA to service repairs and perform warranty claims.

Here’s some more facts about Husqvarna:

Husqvarna is a Swedish company that happens to be the biggest outdoor power equipment producer in the world.

They weren’t always a power equipment company though.

They have a lengthy history of manufacturing seemingly unrelated products:

  1. Husqvarna started out in 1689 making rifles. That was their sole business until 1872 when they added sewing machines to their product catalog.
  2. Started making manual push lawn mowers in 1919 (engine power followed in the late 1940s) and created the first solar powered robotic lawn mower in 1995.
  3. Named after the Huskvarna region of Sweden. Formerly it was its own city.

Let’s take a look at the best Husqvarna lawn mower of each type:

The Best Husqvarna Robot Lawn Mower

AutoMower 430XH

Robot mower by Husqvarna

Husqvarna made the first solar powered robotic mower after buying the patent for it in 1992 from some French guy. They released the first model in 1995.

Since then they have dominated the market and even make the robot mowers for their main competitor, Gardena.

The main takeaway from using the AutoMower 430XH for several hours is the cost is far too high for what you get.

If you refuse to mow your lawn then you may be better off hiring a lawn care company with the money you would have used to buy a robot mower.

Let’s say you have a small lawn of 1/16 of an acre (tennis court size). A professional will mow your lawn in 15 mins. It will you cost the minimum call out fee of ~$80. Averaged out over the year your lawn will get mowed monthly (more in the spring and summer and much less in fall and winter).

Looking at the math:

  • Lawn care company (just mowing): $80/month ($80 x 12 months = $960/year).
  • Automower: $2,500.

Point being: Automowers are still expensive.

However, they are not terrible and work fine for small, square lawns.

Things We Love:

  • Mows your lawn while you stay inside watching football and staying cool.
  • Scheduling when the robot mower should mow your lawn is straightforward and easy to do.
  • It worked great mowing our tennis court size square lawn (but struggled passing through grass walkway size lawn to get to the front lawn portion.)

What Could Be Improved:

  • They are expensive and not many can afford them.
  • You need to dig up your lawn installing a loop wire which the mower uses as a boundary wall.
  • They can’t seem to mow in a straight line or even height so your lawn stripes look messy.

The Best Husqvarna Walk-Behind Mower

Lawn Xpert LE-322 Battery Powered

Husqvarna Battery Mower LE322

Husqvarna has 2 walk behind mowers: 1 gas powered, 1 battery powered.

The battery powered mower is the one we recommend.

Battery electric mowers are fast becoming the most popular and all the lawn and garden equipment brands are rushing to get their own version out.

With such competition all the push mowers are high quality, reliable and durable and there isn’t a lot of tradeoffs to make – they are all good mowers.

If you like the Husqvarna brand and want to buy into their battery powered equipment then this is a great first buy.

However, you must know: electric mowers for the foreseeable future will be 1/3 to 1/4 the horsepower of a gas powered lawn mower – no matter what marketing speak they come up with to trick you.

Things We Love:

  • Battery sizes to choose from 2 Ah to 9.4 Ah. The 9.4 Ah will run the mower for 40 – 50 mins depending on grass height and condition.
  • It is self propelled and cuts grass as good as our EGO and Milwaukee.
  • Folds up nicely for easy storage in shed or under workshop bench.

What Could Be Improved:

  • As with all these cordless electric mowers the batteries are ridiculously expensive.
  • EGO has a supercharger that charges their big batteries in 20 minutes – Husqvarna needs this option to compete.

The Best Husqvarna Riding Lawn Mower

TS 248XD Garden Tractor w/ Kawasaki Engine

Husqvarna Garden Tractor TS248XD

The best Husqvarna riding mower we tried was the TS248XD with a Kawasaki engine and 48″ deck width.

You can see it is a beast in the picture above.

It is a proper garden tractor best suited for you if you have 2+ acres and want the ability for attachments like a dump cart, tractor lift, snow thrower, tow behind spreader, lawn sweeper or grass bagger.

The drive quality was B+ with a comfortable seat and responsive pedals.

However, you should know this is the 2nd most expensive garden tractor by Husqvarna.

Things We Love:

  • Tuff Torq hydrostatic tranny with diff lock so you can navigate off road easily.
  • The seat was comfortable compared to other brand riding mowers.
  • It does cut the grass great and leaves it looking professionally mowed.

What Could Be Improved:

  • Husqvarna needs to have more sound proofing – this thing is loud.
  • The wheels seem to chew up the lawn more than other mowers when turning. Maybe it was the wrong tire pressure or the weight of the mower. This makes it not suitable for sports field mowing but perfect for paddock or acreage mowing.

The Best Husqvarna Zero-Turn Mower

Z254F

Husqvarna Zero Turn Mower Z254F

The most popular zero turn mower for residential use is the Husqvarna Z254F.

We can see why it is the most popular.

It has everything you need in a zero turn mower at a price you can afford.

Overall, we would buy this zero turn over the garden tractor recommended above.

It is faster and can turn sharper to avoid obstacles.

The steering systems takes some getting used to but quickly becomes more fun and precise than a wheel.

The Best Husqvarna Stand-on Lawn Mower

V548

Husqvarna Stand On Mower V548

Stand-on mowers are zero turn mowers you either stand-on or walk behind.

The 3 main advantages to stand-on mowers are:

  1. They are more compact and easier to transport in a trailer or store in your shed. This one is 18″ shorter than the sit down zero turn above.
  2. By standing you have the high view of what you are mowing which is good for avoiding things and planning your mow lines.
  3. You can lean into hills and turns making them even more versatile than sit down zero turns.

Things We Love:

  • Felt really in control standing on the back with a great view of what you have coming.
  • Compact and you save a few feet when in storage.
  • Huge 5-year warranty.
  • Fast top speed of 11 mph.
  • FX series Kawasaki engine.

What Could Be Improved:

  • Stand-on mowers are extremely expensive. This one is 3x the price of both the garden tractor and zero turn mowers above.
