Why does my lawn mower make a screeching noise when I start it, and how do i fix it?

Have you made sure there isn’t a piece of string or rope wrapped around the blade? You might wanna check that before you burn the engine up.

I know alot of the times when there is a loud screech that the bearings on the top part of the shaft that the pull start turns is in need of some oil. Simply remove the bolts that that attach the entire top cover, including the pull start. The top part of the shaft should have a square metal cap that has a tiny hole for oiling the bearings. Drop in some oil or WD-40 and it should fix the problem.

If it has a starter clutch….. yes, that could need a little oiling, wd-40 is just a water displacer…. regular engine oil will do better.

Also make sure the flywheel brake isn’t partially engaged.
