What is the easiest way to edge a lawn? Using a weed whacker or using an edger?

February 4th, 2009

JD asked:

I am trying to decide whether to purchase a weed whacker or an actual “edger” for trimming lawn. In the past, I have always used an edger–however, my new lawn has a side that adjacent to a dirt planter. It seems like a weed whacker is the only way to get to it—but does it produce a straight enough line? Do you have to have a very steady hand?

a weed eater is more versatile, but when i do edging with it i get alot of sand and rocks that hit my legs.

I think a edger does give a much cleaner cut but a weed whacker is more versatile. In reality you should probably have both.

I have used both, and I have a very expensive weed whacker. The edger by far does a better job. It’s nice and even all the way around, and DEFINITELY takes alot less effort!

I just purchased my first edger and found it to be wonderful! I had always used a weed-wacker to edge and found it to be too difficult (messy or the cord would break off). I have a Black and Decker EdgeHog (I think that is what it is called). It is two tools in one and you can trench and then go back and edge and what a difference it made.

I would say that you do need a steady hand for the wacker because you have to hold it up. The edger only has to be steered.

An edger does the best job keeping a lawn looking nice. A weed whacker can be used for a variety of other purposes, though. You have to be able to hold it pretty carefully for a straight line.

Whatever you feel more comfortable using. Both work really well and have differant pros and cons. Go the hardware store and compare them.
