What does it mean to winterize your lawn?

October 9th, 2008

Teri {A Proud Mommy!} asked:

My husband and I are first time homeowners and we received a flier stating we could get our lawn winterized for 30 dollars. What do they do when they winterize your lawn?

Winterizing your yard simply means applying a good fertilizer to get your lawn ready for the stress of a winter. I wouldn’t pay thirty dollars for this–just go to your local garden center and find a fertilizer that is low in nitrogen (the first number) and higest in potassium (the last number). The one we usually sell is 8-12-16.

Have your husband apply the fertilizer, water it in, and you should be good to go for the winter. Take the extra 15 dollars or so and have a nice dinner (well, maybe not THAT nice–LOL).
