How long should I wait before I apply fertilizer to my lawn if I started my lawn from scratch?

April 14th, 2009

RP Squirrel asked:

I seeded March 30th this year (new lawn) and it has grown quite nicely, but there are a few gaps where the lawn hasn’t done so well. If I can fertilize, maybe this will work.

Why not apply a low strength application of liquid fertiliser such as Miracle Gro. This will improve the lawn but unlike the name it is not a Miracle worker and if you have patches you will need to reseed becasue the remaining grass will not grow in to this area. Depending on where you are in the world it may be too hot to reseed now so you may have to wait until late summer / autumn to do so. Good Luck from Scotland.

First are the gaps dead lawn? You may need to put grub killer down, they (grubs) eat the grass roots from underneath and halt growth. You can fertile after 28 days of new growth. I recomment a water (spray) fertilizer with a weed control added. Wait three weeks then reapply. Make sure you water (early morning recommended) when needed preferably every other day depending on circumstances.
