How do I stop my dog from ********* on my lawn?

January 19th, 2009

Renee C asked:

I have a 5 month old Basset Hound and I am happy he is going outside to urinate but I can’t get him to urinate on the small rock bed, he only goes on my back lawn. I had a beautiful lawn that now has several dead spots, does anyone know how to repair the lawn?

Hint: Add 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar to his bowl of water each time you refill it…. your grass will not discolor!

buy grass seeds and cover up the bad spots on the lawn. Also, take him on a leash to the rock bed and wait there until he pees. Do this everyday until you get the point across. hope it helped =]

You’ll have to reseed the areas that are already killed. You have two choices, either A.) Re housetrain your dog (And I mean start ALL over from square one - it’s the only way to teach the dog go in one spot) and only allow him to go on the rock bed (that includes correcting him when he goes on the grass). Or B.) Pour water over the spot your dog pees on. If your flood the area with fresh water it will prevent any burning.

Tehy also have several products available that will chang the PH of your dogs urine and prevent the spots - I’ve never used them myslef but have been told they are a waste of $$

Join everyone else that has a dog,and I bet every other dog owner wished their dog would know when to go out, I don’t care where mine go as long as it not in the living room, I love that their housebroken, be thankful, if you start correcting him for going on the wrong spot outside all your going to do is confuse him, you trained him to out, he is, its reall not fair to be that particular, you might get advise on here, but I am a person around animals all the time I ride horses and am involved with greyhound adoption, ALL my friend have al differnt breed f dogs, none have been traine to *** in 1 spot, and for a Basset or any hound to be housebroken at 5 mo, you are sooo lucky

There are some ways to stop your dog from ****** on the lawn. Although it is very hard to teach them not to because it is outside and outside is a good place for them to go.
A) Buy some fertilizer for the lawn
B) They do sell sprays for around gardens so pets don’t ruin them but I’m not sure what that would do to the yard.
C) When you let the dog out to go to the bathroom. Take it on the leash. Tell it to go *** Pee or something easy like that and pull him over to the rocks
D) The dog may not like the texture of the rocks on his paws, so he will not go there. Try a different rock or just a certain patch of grass that is different from the rest.
E) Use a different type of place for the dog to go, teach him to go there and they will go there for a certain amount of time but this is not certain.

This may or may not help you but this is what I went through to train one of my earlier dogs. D) worked best for me.

Do what emily suggested and take him on leash to where you want him to go till he figures it out. Also Drs Foster & Smith catelog sells a lot of stuff to restore the dead areas on the lawn.

My BOOFUS goes to “Darkest Africa”. That’s what I call a corner of dense scrubb I’v neglected at the end of the garden
It’s also Diggy-Dog area so he has made the hideout his own apart from his “study” in the garage. It’s all a doggie thing and part of the joy of having BOOFUS.
