How can I prevent people from driving on my lawn and breaking the irrigation system?

October 1st, 2008

ashort_sigep asked:

My roommates sometimes have friends park on the lawn, several sprinkler heads have broken. I sometimes see stones with pointed tops, is that the best solution? What do these stones cost? Where can I get them? Are there better options?

A fence would stop them and would help define the yard.

Concrete blocks will do it everytime! Let them drive over a concrete block just once, suffer the body damage, and they will not drive over one again !

I got a trailer load of stones for free at a construction site. I rented a u-haul trailer for 20 bucks, loaded them up myself and built a low wall using mortar to hold the stones together all for under 40 bucks. You can also buy a white picket fence on a wire that rolls out and line the drive with that. The fence comes in 6 and 8 foot rolls for between 15-20 bucks, but I strongly suggest anchoring it into the ground very well because the will blow over in the wind or are easily knocked over by a car if you don’t.

You need something visible. A chain on posts, bushes, a line of stones, … You might also try marking the sprinkler head locations with flags or stones. Whatever you do - it should be clearly visible so people don’t drive on the lawn without seeing the obstructions you are trying to create.

If you have access to some decent-sized stones, they work well.
Logs are also a good choice.

I once lived on a corner lot and teens would cut across my yard cuz it was kind of hilly and fun.
So I got some railroad ties cheap, from the railroad, who was replacing the wooden ties with concrete ties and put them around the yard.
You can bury them half-way into the ground,
or run some spikes through them to keep them in position.
The only down side was I had to pick them up myself from the train tracks…

I suggest telling your roommates that people are not allowed to park on the lawn. Tell them if they park there, the cars will be towed away.
If they don’t stop parking there, I bet they will after the first one is towed.
